Recently retired from a full full-time role as an experienced, trusted and highly rated manager of major and/or complex change programmes in the Financial Services sector with a broad range of experience across asset management, banking and capital markets gained from working at PwC, UBS, Goldman Sachs, RBS and HSBC.

2013 to 2017. Global Head of Change, Regulatory Compliance, HSBC one of the largest banking and financial services organisations in the world located in over 70 countries.

  • 2013 to 2017. Following the 2012 Deferred Prosecution Agreement relating to weaknesses in Anti-Money Laundering procedures and controls, the Bank divided the Compliance function into two.  Recruited by the new Global Head of Regulatory Compliance to spearhead the transformation of the Regulatory Compliance function.   • Redefined the vision and strategy for the function. Rebuilt and simplified the operating model and aligned it with the Bank’s operational risk approach.
  • Developed the concept of a Compliance Management Platform envisaging a suite of applications running on interoperable technology built on a common data model, together with the associated systems development strategy
  • Developed and deployed new tools to support regulatory developments, regulatory mapping, risk assessments, regulatory engagements, issues tracking and advice recording

2010 to 2013. Programme Manager at RBS, one of the oldest UK banks serving the corporate, retail and wealth sectors in the UK and overseas.

  • Dec 2010 to 2013. Programme Manager on the Finance Risk and Treasury Change Programme (FiRST), initially for risk systems, and subsequently for a release of finance and treasury functionality for mortgage products. Responsible for designing the programme structure, planning, budgeting, resourcing, governance, communications, benefits, PMO team, day to day management, and co-ordinating a delivery model based on a matrix of responsibilities.

2010. Programme Manager at Deutsche Bank, a leading European bank serving the financial needs of corporations, institutions, and private and business clients worldwide.

  • 2010. Programme Manager in Legal, Risk and Capital Operations responsible for portfolio of projects including the re-engineering of position reporting.

2009. Programme Manager with assignments at the Care Quality Commission, Elderstreet Investments, and HSBC

  • HSBC Global Custody. Review and analysis of IT project plans for 2010.
  • Elderstreet Investments. Review of a company invested in by this VC fund and identification and evaluation of the market for the company’s software product.
  • Care Quality Commission - Manager of Business Continuity. Responsible for overseeing the safe handover at launch of key managerial responsibilities and work in progress from three existing regulators to the new health regulator. Planned, developed and rolled out a business continuity programme and masterminded their response to swine flu.

2004 to 2008. Programme Manager at Goldman Sachs, one of the oldest and largest global investment banking, securities and investment management firms with over 30,000 employees. Recruited by Global Compliance to manage large/complex change programmes. Achievements include…

  • 2006-7 Successful implementation of MiFID. The European Markets in Financial Instruments Directive required all entities in the Goldman Sachs group in Europe to make significant and wide ranging changes to policies, systems and procedures before 1 November 2007, particularly in respect of trading systems.
  • Scoped and planned the approach to this two year programme. Established the Steering Committee, Project Office and Workstreams. Managed 12 project managers. Supervised the analysis and interpretation of the new rules. Identified and evaluated project risks. Tracked progress on changes to 130 front, middle and back office systems, changes to business processes, the issuing of new terms of business to clients, updating of policies and training of 3,000+ staff. Reported regularly on progress to senior management and the regulator. Managed the budget of $25m.
  • All the necessary systems, procedural and policy changes were delivered on time ensuring that the firm was fully compliant by the deadline.

  • 2008 Firmwide remediation of accounts in trading systems. The firm needed to review and enhance controls over trading systems to reduce the risk of rogue trading, and specifically to eliminate any old or unused accounts in trading systems globally.
  • Took over and re-planned an existing project introducing clarity around responsibilities and timescales. Ensured that necessary input from Operations, Technology and Controllers was delivered on time. Reported regularly to the Steering Committee and to senior management in New York. Several thousand unnecessary accounts were identified and closed as a result.

  • 2004-5 Successful delivery of a global registration system. The firm had a several inconsistent systems for recording the registrations of traders and sales people with the relevant regulators and exchanges, and largely manual processes for updating them. A new global registration system was required.
  • Established the Steering Committee and project structure. Organised and planned the business analysis and the specification of functional requirements ensuring appropriate business/user involvement. Managed the vendor selection process and supervised system development by the vendor. Joint responsibility for a budget of $3m. Planned and supervised user testing and managed the global implementation and roll out.
  • With the successful delivery of a new global registration system incorporating a new technical architecture, innovative automated workflow and direct interfaces with certain regulators, the registration processes were centralised and speeded up, self-help was introduced and administrative headcount and costs were reduced.

2003. Programme Manager at UBS, a leading global wealth manager, global investment banking and securities firm, and one of the largest global asset managers.

  • Directed a major AML programme. UBS urgently needed to enhance their money laundering defences so as to meet the expectations of the regulator.
  • Devised a detailed programme covering policy development, training, process redesign, systems enhancement and launch, and an upgrading of the surveillance and monitoring capability. Developed the business requirements for enhancing the account opening workflow tool. Planned and supervised user testing, user training and rollout. The resulting changes in procedures and enhancements to controls were accepted by the regulator, eliminating the risk of enforcement action.

2000 to 2001. Operations Director at CapCLEAR, a start up business establishing the first clearing house for B2B exchanges and OTC marketplaces using internet technology. The operational systems and support team needed to be built from the ground up.

 

      Designed the functionality of the company's clearing and settlement system including the banking interfaces and the web front end.  Developed the system security architecture.  Successfully managed the software development (using intelligent agent technology) by a third party software house and ran acceptance testing.

 

Developed key supplier relationships including the analysis and selection of a Public Key Infrastructure supplier. Orchestrated strategic relationships with exchanges and developed the necessary functionality and interfaces. Planned the service integration and launch.

 

Built the core operational team, successfully ran the finance function, handled HR matters and participated in the marketing launch.

 

At the end of 15 months work Version 1 of the clearing and settlement system was successfully delivered for user testing and the initial operations team was in place.

·     A consortium of fund management companies wanted to improve the cost efficiency of the intermediary distribution channel by providing an electronic communication network in the form of an industry utility.

 

Successfully devised and managed the structure and content of a major 15 month programme. Facilitated agreement amongst a consortium of sponsoring companies to the central design concept. Directed the prototyping phase and designed the programme to assess the strategic options for build. Managed the Steering Committee consisting of senior Board directors of consortium members. Managed the sales process for all subsequent phases of work. The agreed design was subsequently developed and launched (as EMX Co), reducing costs and improving productivity.

 

Advised on the 1986 Financial Services Act working with all levels of management in bancassurers, building societies, investment managers, life companies, and other financial services companies on strategic and organisational reviews.

 

·     Seconded as Compliance Officer to a leading bancassurer, managing the client’s team through an organisational change. Implemented risk-based monitoring.

 

·     Undertook a number of in-depth and high profile internal organisational reviews at IMRO. Appointed as temporary enforcement officer by Lautro to lead investigations on their behalf. Undertook extensive investigations into unit trust pricing errors.
